Seeing the vast potential of working together to build the Hampton Roads economy and quality of life, the Class of 1996 took their message of regionalism directly to our local city councils. At their urging, the five Southside city councils agreed to adopt “A Hampton Roads Community” and display it prominently on city welcome signs. Today, these signs can be seen on most major roads at the point they cross city boundaries.
After studying homelessness in our region, the Class of 2007 responded by launching an innovative awareness campaign. The Class spent a night in Town Point Park drawing media attention and raising funds to assist in completing the furnishing of the Gosnold Apartments, part of Virginia Supportive Housing for homeless adults.
The Class of 2012 created a regional essay contest to encourage appreciation of Hampton Roads among our youth and to assist high school students eligible for the reduced or free lunch program in funding post-secondary education. A $2,500 scholarship and a place in the eXcel leadership class was awarded to two students. The Class of 2013 continues the tradition.
LEAD OnBoard (formerly the Board Partnership Initiative) was created by the Class of 2000 to connect LHR graduates with nonprofit boards throughout Hampton Roads. More than 500 graduates have joined organizations across the region to lend their business expertise and community awareness for one-year assignments.
An annual series of community forums designed to bring together cross sections of our population to engage in the work of envisioning a better Hampton Roads. Initiated by the Class of 2011, the forums continue as the Class of 2013 explores how we can expand regional collaboration.
Members of the LEAD Hampton Roads Class of 2013 have launched and established a class project titled LEADers Among Us. The focus of the project is to recognize the leadership of specific Hampton Roads residents in extraordinary Hampton Roads events. The vision is to bring to life the leadership and contributions of key individuals and important events in Hampton Roads history that will that create a sense of place and inspire future generations. LEADers Among Us will focus on “instances of leadership,” where the actions of an individual or small group resulted in successful achievement of a key event in Hampton Roads’ history. Video and written formats will be released in the coming months.
